Aloha Nassau County Chapter of MOAA Members –

The Chapter is definitely firing on all cylinders and engaging across all the mission area’s of Advocacy – Philanthropy & Community Service – Camaraderie. Captain Bill Dull, USN provided an interesting presentation regarding Navy Submarine Base, Kings Bay at the April Chapter Meeting. Those in attendance at the meeting were also able to meet this year’s JROTC Scholarship recipient, Jocelyn Smith, and hear directly about her future plans (Philanthropy & Community Service). Thank you Mike Doran for leading the meeting.

I was not able to attend the April Chapter meeting as I was in Washingtons DC as part of MOAA’s Advocacy in Action (AiA) team. MOAA had 160 members from 49 states participating in AiA. Those 160 members collectively made over 300 office visits to members of Congress to advance MOAA Legislative Priorities. Florida as a whole lead all of MOAA by a wide margin in letters sent to Congress and your specific participation in       Call-to-Action emails played a large part in MOAA and Florida’s success, you are making an impact (Advocacy)!  Thank you Mike McClane for leading the Call-to-Action effort.

Our 28 April Officers Call was another successful event with several first time new members attending. It’s hard to beat First Love Brewery as it is a great venue with delicious pizza. Thank you to all that came out and participated (Camaraderie).

May will also be a busy month for the Chapter with our monthly luncheon meeting on 12 May and the guest speaker being Janet Adkins, Supervisor of Elections for Nassau County. There will also be a donation drive scheduled for the month…more to follow. The Chapter will hold a Remembrance Ceremony on Memorial Day for Sam Lane and Charlie Finnigan at Veterans Memorial Park in Fernandina Beach at 0930. For event dates and times, go to the Meetings Calendar posted to the website at www.ncflmoaa.org and also the Meeting & Speaker Presentation slides for information.

Please…

Tony

Florida Council of Chapters February 2026 Communiqué

The MOAA Florida Council of Chapters (FCOC) is comprised of 36 Chapters with nearly 4,000 members and their families. FCOC is one of MOAA’s largest Councils. MOAA has a membership of over 380,000 members in all 50 States. The FCOC’s primary communication vehicles are our bi-monthly publication The COUNCIL COMMUNIQUÉ and our Website http://www.MOAAFL.org. The COMMUNIQUÉ is distributed electronically to all our chapters, MOAA Headquarters in Virginia, and our influential contacts across the state of Florida.

Packed with new, interesting, and informative information about other Florida Chapters.

Did you know…

  • The Florida Council of Chapters has more chapters receiving Levels of Excellence Awards, Harris Communications Awards, and MOAA Community Outreach Grants than any other State.
  • That Florida engages more than any other state with our legislators through MOAA’s advocacy center.
  • That during Advocacy in Action 2024 “Team Florida represented our thirty-eight chapters and all 38,000 MOAA Members residing in Florida. Our mission was to advocate for all veterans and their families to ensure the promises made to veterans are kept and to highlight MOAA’s strength in numbers,” reported Col. Steve Bond, USA (Ret).  Our own CAPT Tony LaVecchia, USN (Ret), the NE Florida Area VP represented our Nassau Chapter.
  • Florida sent the most email messages through MOAA’s Legislative Action Center. There were over 1,700 messages from Florida alone of a total nationally of 6,750.

Advocacy In Action 2026

The Campaign is on—MOAA’s annual legislative event, Advocacy in Action (AiA) is here, and we need all our members to demonstrate support on behalf of the Uniformed Services Community for more than 22 million servicemembers, veterans, retirees, families, and survivors.  This year, MOAA is focusing on four key initiatives:

–Major Richard Star Act – Ends the retirement pay offset for combat-injured veterans medically retired before 20 years.

–Shutdown Fairness Act – Ensures servicemembers continue to receive pay during government shutdowns.

–GUARD VA Benefits Act – Stops predatory claims agents from charging veterans for VA disability claims assistance.

–Military CARE Act – Improves access to care and accountability within military treatment facilities.

What you can do:

(1)  Be informed – Learn more about AiA and these issues at: https://www.moaa.org/aialaunch2026.

(2)  Spread the word – Talk with friends and family and encourage their support. Anyone can sign up and send messages through the Legislative Action Center!

(3) Take Action – Sign up in MOAA’s Legislative Action Center and send the emails to Congress, or call lawmakers through the MOAA Capitol Hotline (866-272-6622).

Sign up now and Take Action — Be an advocate, it is what we do!
